I had a busy day yesterday and wasn’t able to address the multiple replies I got from a Centurion and TUS about, Rawr, a moderator, who I argued, per at least the spirit of the rules, should not be posting nazi memes to the site.
I was first told by TUS (http://disq.us/p/2wem00a)
We allow calling a country or even its people nazis. We would not, however, allow calling Jews or Muslims such insults as nazis.
I was told by TUS (http://disq.us/p/2wewe2q)
The rules are NOT harder on homophobic memes than on Antisemitic ones… I think that the problem that is blinding you to the fairness of our rules is that you are conflating Jews with the state of Israel… The problem is in your perception of them. That is why I have tried to interpret and explain them here for you.
Respectfully: the problem is your enforcement of your rules, and preferring to circle the wagons to protect your moderators rather than ask them to be respectfully good community members.
Rawr is clear: he’s posting memes comparing the actions of the Israeli government to Nazis… because Israel is majority Jewish. He’s picking on the Jews, and you don’t care. (But if someone picks on gay people in your community, Rawr’s right there with the delete key the ban-hammer, and his ultra thin-skin to keep conversation respectable)
Who do I say he’s being clear? Because… in a reply to the same post you replied to… (http://disq.us/p/2weuv35) he says:
Except it’s only targeted at those people in Israel, who coincidentally also happen to be Jewish.
So he’s not really targetting “Israelis.” This isn’t about the 20% of Israelis who are Muslim, or the Christians, or the Atheists, or the Bahai, or the Druze minorities in Israel. For him: this is about Jews. (Because he can’t describe Israeli politics or society beyond “They are Jews.” The reality of Israel being diverse and pluralistic doesn’t register in his comments.)
Rawr’s intentionally arguing with the graphics he chooses to post are about the Jews in the state of Israel defending themselves from war crimes… are exactly like the people who tried to wipe them out industrially 80 years ago. That’s what the memes are saying
Incidently… those memes? One’s from 2010, the other’s from 2018. This isn’t an argument that Israel’s latest actions in Gaza are Nazi-like. This is a perpetual and ongoing argument that Jews defending themselves are exactly like those who wanted to murder them all, and are morally wrong to defend themselves.
I request you to stop letting your volunteer staff abet such ongoing hatefulness through graphics posted to the community. If they want to lay out in text… go ahead. But graphics are different than text. They read faster, and convey more meaning.
Judge your volunteers, and what they post, with more stringent standards than they use in the community they monitor, and at least look like you care about all minorities feeling welcome.
Stop letting Rawr pick on the Jews, which is what he says he’s doing, and delete the memes comparing them to Nazis.
Just like you said you would if such was actually the case.
