I don’t think this series of comments should have been deleted by Gehenna.
You’re allowing trans- activists to frame the debate if you don’t allow others to express the view that gender dysphoria is a mental illness. Mental illness is not a clearly or precisely defined term, but it generally refers to a condition in which an individual strongly believes things that are contrary to reality. Strongly believing oneself to be a woman, when one is actually a biological male, (or vice versa) is contrary to reality.
Now, you may disagree with my take on this issue, but it’s certainly a legitimate point of view. The term “transphobic” is pretty malleable, but if it’s to mean anything beyond a blanket condemnation of anyone who criticizes the contemporary trans-activist agenda, it should be limited to the expression of actual hateful views. Taking the stance that recognizing gender dysphoria as a mental illness, rather than believing that a person’s beliefs can actually change his/her gender/sex (whatever we’re calling it) does not disparage trans individuals. In fact, it’s an attempt to help them.
I think my comments should be reinstated and I think that, so long as individuals are respectful, they should be allowed to express the previously uncontroversial position that trans people (i.e. people suffering from gender dysphoria) are mentally ill. I think that’s consistent with the community guidelines.
