Can I call the yesterday NOLA attacker a racist?

Hi,

Moderator “Obey” threatened to give me time out for calling yesterday NOLA attacker a “racist”

Not asking for my comment to be restored, just would like to know if this is a simple  misunderstanding or am I supposed to avoid offending a terrorist (or a suspect of terrorism to be legally accurate)?
